VIPROVED BRAKING SYSTEM IN TROLLEYBUSES FOR SPAIN

A SYSTEM of rheostatic braking for trolleybuses, which has had over wo years' successful service in a trolleyus of Reading Corporation, is being tted to three sets of equipment ordered rum the General Electric Co., Ltd., by le Tranvia Electrico de Pontevedra, pain.

With this system, in order to avoid isk of damage to the transmission, the -iaximum braking torque at high needs is limited by inverse excitation rom a field winding connected in series iith the motor armature across the line. St low speeds this winding and the ection of the motor series winding ihich is left in circuit during braking ct cumulatively to provide braking ffort nearly to a standstill.

The result is a more constant brakingffort curve than is obtainable by other aethods, whilst performance when hot .nd cold corresponds closely. The ystem is patented, and is known as the .R. system of rheostatic braking.

The motors in the new Pontevedra quipment have a 1-hr, rating of 95 hp,

.t 500v. The control equipment is nounted in the cab and incorporates a Putt-contact master controller,

CUSTOMERS INCREASE COSTS

rUSTOMERS can help to reduce Ise' costs by keeping demands on an even keel for as long as possible says, Lord Burghley, chairman of Birmid Industries, Ltd., •in his annual report. During the year under review, wide fluctuations in demand occurred in a number of cases. These entailed periods of costly overtime and night work and were followed by equally costly periods of partial or complete cessation of demand.

"In some instances, it is almost certain that more careful, and far-sighted planning by some customers would have avoided such dislocations," Lord Burghley comments.
