Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Hercules Motors Corporation, Canton, Ohio, the engine products of which are used on certain vehicles available in this countrY, announces the introduction of the QX series of power unit. There are two L-headed six-cylindered models in the range— the QXA having a bore of 31 ins, and a stroke of 41 ins., and QXB, having a 21-in, bore and a 41-in. stroke. The two models are identical in general design, and both peak at 3,000 r.p.m., at which speed the former develops 55.5 h.h.p. and the latter engine generates 60 b.h.p.

To meet present-day operating conditions, calling for sustained high speed, special attention has been given to valve cooling, and water completely surrounds the valve seats, The forcefeed system of lubrication is .adopted for main and big-end bearings. The crankcase is cast integral with the cylinder block, and the crankshaft is 2.1 ins, in diameter and is supported in seven main bearings. Although the pistons are normally of cast iron, aluminium pistons can be furnished. The camshaft is on the right side of the engine and is supported by four 11-in. bearings. The total quantity of material hauled was 20,037 tons, at a cost of is. 5.12d. per ton.

The above cost figures cover wages, fuel, repairs, etc., but exclude depreciation, interest and a number of other items.

In addition, 93,641 tons of material were hauled by hired vehicles, at a cost of 212,834 ls, lid., or an average of 2s. 8.8d. per ton, against 2s. 6.6d. per ton in the previous year.

Ford Expansion Completed at Dagenham.

Important additions to the production resources of the Ford works at Dagenham, which have been in progress during the past few months, have now been completed. By the erection of balconies, no less than 120,000 sq. ft. of floor space have been added to the engineering shops devoted to the foundry, manufacturing and assembly processes, increasing the capacity by 11 'per cent. With the additions now made, the mammoth building has a total floor area equal to over 30 acres. During the past few months there has been an increase of 20 per cent, in the num her of men employed at the Ford works. HAULIER GOES TO RAILWAY FOR HELP.

That the applicant haulage firm had been unable to obtain the use of enough vehicles to. satisfy their customers, and had asked the L.N.E. Railway Co. to carry 40 tons, and another haulier 70 tons, in both cases during October, was a point mentioned at the hearing of an application, at York, last week. Messrs. Holliday's Garage, of Pickering, applied for an additional vehicle under an A licence.

Mr.. F. G. Bibbings, Yorkshire Area secretary, A.R.O., for the applicant, said that during the year 1934-35, the two existing vehicles operated under an A licence earned 21,593. In 1935-36, the receipts from these machines substantially increased, the total for that year being 22,850.

Mr. C. W. Holliday gave evidence as to a shortage of vehicles, and said that. on more than one occasion the railway company and the haulier previously mentioned had been unable to help him. He could keep the additional vehicle fully employed. Agricultural traffic formed 97 per cent, of his business.

Warm Tributes to Haulage Company's Advocate.

Mr. H. Fenwick Dening, who for two years has represented Garlick. Burrell and Edwards, Ltd., in the traffic courts, has been transferred to London to the staff of Hay's Wharf Cartage Co., Ltd., the parent company. No successor has been appointed.

At a sitting of Sir William Hart, North-Western Deputy Licensing Authorityllast week, eloquent tributes to Mr. Dening were paid by Sir William, Mr. Ian Macaulay, barrister, Mr. H. I. Nelson, barrister, Mr. V. R. Shepherd, solicitor, Mr. Allen Walter and Mr. G. H. P. Bearnes, the railway lawyer,
