A REPORT published this week, recommends changes designed to enhance the role of the Chartered Institute of Transport in promoting higher standards of performance tied to the increasing technological and organisational complexity of the transport industry.

A committee of eight Fellows of the Institute, under the chairmanshipof Sir Peter Masefield, has spent 18 months on a wide-ranging study of transport, with particular reference to the needs for qualified manpower and appropriate training and education.

The report calls attention to the employment role of transport which accounts for some 9 per cent of the nation's employment (about 2,300,000 people); consumes some 17 per cent of all energy used; absorbs about 13 per cent of all consumer spending and investment in transport is 19 per cent of total public expenditure. The report will be considered by the CIT members and appropriate government, education, training and employers' organisations will be asked for their comments. On October 31 the Institute's Council will consider further steps.
