Obituary

It is with regret that we announce the death of former transport fleet operator and Brighton council alderman Victor Nicholls who has died at the age of 83.

Mr Nicholls began his transport career after the First World War with one ex-army lorry. By 1944 he had 264 vehicles and when he sold out to Associated Coal and Wharf Companies in 1961 he had a fleet of 700 vehicles and the takeover price was £500,000.

Mr Nicholls was one of the early advocates of articulated vehicles and in 1947 each of his tractive units had three trailers.
