Driver wen Griffiths, 30, was in ch rge of a 3-ton coal lorry when it collided with a car in ent last January, killing a doctor's wife and her son.

At an itliquest in MaidStone, coroner Gerald Coombe said evidence vas that the accident , as caused by Mr Griffiths either being in a diabetic cra or suffering the start of o e. Although Mr Griffiths had notified wansea Driver Vehide and Licensing Centre of his ailme t, and had in fact Yeen granted a licence, the law had subsequently been changed on January 1, and a letter was on its way to him on the day of the accident telling him his application for a new licence had been refused.

Mr Coombe said it was "one of the most cruel ironies of the case".

In view of the situation, Mr Coombe said he would not bring a charge of manslaughter, but instead, a verdict of accidental death was recorded.
