Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ichelin's commitment to the environment is evident at all levels of its business from the development and manufacture of new tyres, through a long life on the road, to the disposal of worn casings. These days, the company's end-of-life truck tyres end up as non-polluting fuel for cement kilns, children's play area surfaces or road coveringsbut only after hundreds of thousands of kilometres have been clocked up.

As the leading manufacturer in the UK's CV tyre replacement market, Michelin is proud to support CM ยง Little Green Truck initiative.

"Many people outside road transport see trucks as terrible polluters, pumping out fumes and clogging up roads," says Chris Bloor, commercial director in the UK and Republic of Ireland. "So CM'S Little Green Truck initiative is what this industry needs to highlight its green credentials, while encouraging operators to take additional steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

"Respect for the environment has been one of Michelin's five key values since 2002. Every day our road staff are involved in discussions with customers about how Michelin can play a significant role in meeting their green objectives by reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

"With potential customers, our aim is to sell them fewer tyres, by helping them realise the true benefits of a set of Michelins which can be regrooved, remoulded and regrooved again to maximise tyre life," he adds.

And it's not just talk. Only last month, CM (28 February) reported that a four-year-old 6x2 tractor unit in the Samworth Brothers Distribution fleet in Plymouth had passed the one-million-kilometre mark on the same set of Michelin drive-axle tyre casings, with the potential for another 500,000km.

"These kinds of achievements are only possible when the industry works together to encourage best practice, but when it does, the results speak for themselves," adds Bioor. "By partnering with CM and Shell, I hope we can play a key role in ensuring that the Little Green Truck becomes the clean face of our industry. It's a programme I'm proud for Michelin to be supporting."

ustine Clare, cluster manager for Shell Lubricants, says: "A key issue facing businesses, governments and consumers is the environmental challenge, and how we need to understand what can be done to minimise the impact of our actions. Shell UK Oil Products is proud to support the Little Green Truck campaign because is in line with Shell's business principles. We're pleased to be partnering CM and Michelin to promote efficiency and energy conservation in the UK's road haulage industry.

"Working with major fleet customers and truck-makers, we know how efficient modern vehicles are when they are well maintained and operated. This initiative not only broadcasts just how responsible the industry is being to a much wider audience, but it also promotes best practice to those operators that need some guidance on how they can reduce their environmental impact without compromising on performance.

"While we know the important role lubricants can play in helping to increase efficiency, cut emissions and reduce costs for fleets, we are also aware operators face a tremendous range of engine choices and operating circumstances. Finding the most cost-effective way of running a fleet is a tough proposition, and Shell Lubricants companies are dedicated to providing products and technical solutions to help hauliers meet this challenge.'

Clare adds: "Operators can find a happy medium that allows them to minimise costs and reduce their impact on the environment, whether they are looking for fuel efficiency, extended maintenance periods, low emissions, or a combination of all three. And that where campaigns like the Lithe Green Truck play their part, not only for the planet, but for the future of haulage in the UK."
