The Latest Doings and Developments in the Bus and Coach World.

MANCHESTER COACH ,FARES.

Most Owners in the Lancashire City Agree on a Set of Standard Rates.

THE MOVEMENT for securing uniform motor coach fares for Manchester for the coming season has made

some progress. So far, most of the firms with headquarters in the city have agreed on a set ot standard 'sites; some differences in the outlying districts have yet to be adjusted. Generally speaking, they will be about. is. 6d. less than last year on faresof about half a guinea, and of is. orb those of less amount.

The day trip from Manchester to Buxton will be 5s. instead of 7s., and a new circular run, including Matlock and Buxton, will be run by the Fleet Motor Services at 10s. Llandudno will be reached for 15s., and Colwyn Bay for a shilling less.

.s_There is an increasing tendency for proprietors of motor coach services to organize catering -as well as travelling.

The Grey Motors fleet, of which Mr. Hilderbrandt is the proprietor, was the pioneer of catering services in Manchester, and from his headquarters at. 185, .City Road, Thalme, he will run a fleet of four Dennis 28-seaters, two 14-seater Fiats, and a 20 h.p. Stewart-arranging luncheon and tea on board or at suitable places en route. His menus are varied and adapted to the pockets of his patrons, many of whom are booking so well ahead that, Mr. Hilderbrandt contemplates a good season.

An interesting development of Mr.

Hilderbrandt's services is the provision of -motor coaches (14-seaters being used on such -expeditions) for city-councillors visiting municipal institutions in a body. Last year he tried Macintosh-N.A.P. tyres, and is so convinced of their value that he has just given instructions for all his Dennis vehicles to be fitted with these tyres, which, as recently announced in The Commercial Motor, are also being adopted by motor coach owners at Preston, Macclesfield, and other Lancashire towns associated in close proximity to Manchester.

As a practical driver of vehicles, as well as a pioneer organizer of motor trips, Mr. Hildarbrandt says N.A.P. tyres ensure a keener grip of the road, and enable greater ease of steering to be secured than is usual.

The example of Manchester • coach owners in agreeing to adhere to a definite • schedule of rates is worthy of emulation on the part of proprietors in other coaching centres. It is only by combined effort that the problem of rates, which is one of the most difficult the industry has to -'ace, will find a ready solution.
