Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• After reading the letter about driver training in respect of hours and tachograph rules (CM 16-22 May), it appears there is very little training available in this field.

This subject is one in which the industry has shown very little interest. My experience over the past two years since I retired from the Department of Transport has been that not only do the average drivers not have much idea about the hours and tachograph rules, but management is also very lax. It fails to encourage a positive attitude to training which would not only help drivers but also managers.

Over the past 18 months I have been asked by a number of operators in this area to give training talks to drivers and management.

[have had a very positive response from drivers, who have told me many times that it was the first time anyone had explained the rules to them — they had picked up what little information they had at transport cafes.

The training establishments in the area appear to give only superficial advice on their courses, the result being that drivers pick up their knowledge from equally poorly informed colleagues.

This lack of proper training would appear to be purely due to lack of funding, as they say their clients would not be prepared to pay that little bit extra. The extra cost involved is not very great, especially when the overall benefits are taken into consideration such as less hassle when stopped; charts handed in with fewer errors; and greater peace of mind.
