FUEL savings of nearly ten million tonnes of oil a year, or about 40 per cent of total UK vehicle consumption in 1988, could be achieved by the end of the century through technical developments in engines, transmission and body design, according to a Department of Energy report.
The report Prospects for improved Fuel Economy and Fuel Flexibility in Road Vehicles' (HMSO — £6.20) says these economies could be achieved witout sacrifice sacrifice of performance.
The report concludes that it should be possible to maintain and even expand the present type of road transport system "probably well into the next century".
It describes the areas of development which will need to be tackled, including research into engines which could burn a wide range of liquid fuels and research into electric vehicles.
