Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

put "long vehicle" plates on the rear of trailers which are hauled by my vehicles even though they are trailers from a Continental country. I was under the impression that such trailers do not need such rear markings. Could you quote the law ? A You are quite correct. Foreign trailers temporarily in this country need not carry reflective rear marker plates.

The original Regulations, the Motor Vehicles (Rear Marking) Regulations 1970, which introduced reflective rear marker plates on December 1, 1970, were not clear on this point. Regulation 2(n) exempted only "vehicles brought temporarily into great Britain by a person resident abroad" so that the intention to exempt trailers attached to British vehicles was obscure.

However, Regulation 3(b) of the Motor Vehicles (Rear Markings) (Amendment) Regulations 1972 added a further paragraph (nn) to the original Regulations. This exempted " a trailer brought into Great Britain and having a base or centre in a country outside Great Britain from which the use of the vehicle on a journey is normally commenced, a period of 12 months not having elapsed since the vehicle in question was last brought into Great Britain."

Thus, if your vehicle is drawing a foreign trailer which has been in this country less than 12 months 'then reflective rear marker plates are not required.
