This show-stopping demonstration cost Mercedes not a penny in fees, because they already provide two Type 408 vans on free loan to the Red Devils (one of them was in • attendance at Eastbourne). And the pay-off from the • exercise did not end there. At the dinner it was announced that the parachutists had brought to the Mayor of Eastbourne a goodwill message from the Mayor of Stuttgart (where Mercs have their hq) who is none other than Erwin Rommel—son of the famous Panzer field-marshal.
As a combination of corporate PR and good international relations the whole project revealed staff work of which the old Desert Fox would have approved.
