A CODE of action should be posted in buses so that members of the public were perfectly aware of their duties when bus crews were being attacked, it was suggested in the Commons last week.

The idea came from Mr Carol Mather (Tory, Esher) when the Commons were debating the Public Service Vehicles Bill, which gives the police power to arrest people who have committed certain offences on buses and trams, and refuse to give their name and address.

Dr Shirley Summerskill, Under-Secretary at the Home Office, who introduced the Bill —and successfully asked for it to be given a Second Reading—said two-way radios were showing great success. Leicester, where two-thirds of the buses were equipped in this way, claimed a 70 per cent detection rate and a 55 per cent conviction rate for assaults.

The question of free bus travel for the police was still under active discussion between the Commissioner of Police and the staff associations, she said.
