Wide Range of Specialpurpose Vehicles to be Exhibited at the Royal Show, Bristol

1TH nearly 600 stands displaying the whole of the products and equipment of British agriculture, the visitor to the Royal Agricultural Show, to be held at Whitchurch Airport, Bristol, from July 1-4, will see much to interest him. The showground is open daily between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the opening day, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on succeeding days. Admission charges are: July 1, LII, July 2, 10s., July 3, 75. 6d. and July 4, 5s.

Machinery and ancillary -equipment are largely grouped in Fifth Avenue, the main east-west axis of the Show. Here will be found a range of special vehicles for the transport of livestock, as well as tractors, trailers, implements and earthmoving machinery.

A. C. Penman, Ltd., Dumfries, are to exhibit examples of their 3-ton horsebox and 5-ton livestock containers on Stand 473. The former is mounted on an Austin chassis powered by an oil engine. This four-horse container is equipped with the Penman patent dismounting gear, a ramp consisting of two parallel inclined bars to be erected in garage or yard. The vehicle is driven between the bars where the ramp picks up the container, allowing the lorry to be driven forward unloaded. A low-load-line spring-balanced rear door is provided.

The livestock container is also equipped with the Penman dismounting gear and sprung rear door. The aluminium-alloy platform body is mounted on an Austin 5-ton oil-engined chassis and the container itself is panelled in aluminium alloy.

On Stand 487, G. C. Smith (Coachworks), Long Whatton, Loughborough, will show an interesting range of horseboxes and trailers in a variety of materials. Thames Trader chassis-cab units are used for both a four-stall horsebox and a cattle truck, constructed in composite materials, and there will be another livestock vehicle in light metals. Other trailers for one and two horses and for general purposes are to be exhibited.

Carmichael and Sons (Worcester), Ltd., Worcester, will exhibit two containers on Leyland Comet and Cornrner TS3 D38 chassis on Stand 474. The former is a 21-ft. mahogany model, complete with sheep decks and two dividing gates. The linings are of steel and the body includes a Luton calf box. The Commer version has a 19-ft. container of similar specification. Both boxes are suitable for horses.

Vincents of Reading, Ltd., Reading (Stand 482), are to exhibit their Streamline and Norfolk three-horse boxes. The Streamline is mounted on a Bedford chassis with three-seat cab. The stalls are fully padded and matted and ramps are provided at side and rear. There is a luggage compartment over the cab and a grooms' compartment is built in at the rear.

The Norfolk model is mounted on an Austin forward-control chassis and has a commodious compartment at the rear for grooms and equipment.

On Stand 481 Rice Trailers, Ltd., Cosby. Leicester, will be showing a fourwheeled twin horsebox trailer of allaluminium construction. The box weighs 2 cwt. less than its timber forerunner 'and the additional.cost is small.

The Tye Trailer Co., Ltd., York (Stand 225), will show their 44-ton and 3-ton hydraulic tipping trailers. The Tydraulic 90 has a body 10 ft. long and 6 ft. 6 in. wide and gives a 70° angle of tip, using a large diameter telescopic ram.

The 3-ton version, of lighter construction than the 90, has dimensibns of 10 ft. by 6 ft., and, like the larger model, has a 70° tipping angle. Both versions have a Tye universal hitch, suitable for tractors equipped with pick-up or clevis hitches.

F. W. Wheatley (Trailers), Ltd., Peterborough (Stand 152), will be showing their new Universal trailer, the leading feature of which is its rectangularsection tubular-steel construction. The chassis and body runners are fabricated from 5-in. by 2-in, material, giving great strength with lightness. The crossmembers are also of tubular steel and are welded to the frame.

The hinged sides and tail door are secured without corner posts and the drawbar, terminating in a dual-purpose hitch, is also of 5 in. by 2 in. tube. The body measures 10 ft. by 6 ft. 6 in., with 15 in. sides. The capacity is 4 tons.

The Salop Trailer Co., Ltd., Old

C.Aeham, Shrewsbury, will show on Stand 168 their range of twoand fourwheeled trailers, with capacities from 30 cwt. to 70 cwt. These are designed primarily for use with Ferguson tractors and are of welded steel construction with body framing in oak and flooring of hardwood. Sides and back are hinged and detachable, and tipping is by an underfloor heavy-duty ram actuated from the tractor hydraulic system. A threeway tipping trailer will also be shown.

In addition to their range of implements, Whitlock Bros., Ltd., Great Yeldham, Essex, will show on Stand 373, Misted dump wagons of 5-ton capacity with hydraulic tipping gear for bulk grain, roots and so on.

The company also manufacture a. series of tractor-drawn trailers, in twoand four-wheeled versions. These are of all-steel or steel-and-timber construction and are available as fixed platform types or with one-way and three-way tipping gear. Tractor transport boxes of 1015-cwt. capacity will also be displayed. Of pressed steel, they are specifically designed for use with Fordson, David Brown, Ferguson and Nuffield tractors.

Taskers of Andover (1932), Ltd., Andover, are to show several trailers and farm wagons on Stand 184. The 3-ton Universal two-wheeled hydraulic tipping trailer will be displayed with deep sides and removable wire-mesh extensions used for silage—a feature first introduced at the Smithfield Show last year. Fixed and screw-tipping trailers of the same capacity are also available.

The Rover Co., Ltd., Solihull (Stand 21), will display the Series II Land-Rover (introduced last April) in its various styles. Both 88-in. and I09-in, wheelbase models are available, the former powered by a 2-litre petrol or oil engine, the latter by a 24-litre petrol or 2-litre oil engine. 'The larger petrol engine develops 77 b.h.p. at 4,250 r.p.m. with a compression ratio of 7 to 1. The 2-litre power unit is rated at 52 b.h.p.

The tractor division of Ford Motor Co., Ltd., Dagenham, will stage a comprehensive display on Stand 232. Fordson Dextas and Majors in a variety of guises, County crawlers, industrial equipment and agricultural implements will be on show side by side with factoryapproved equipment from many manufacturers.

ington Spa (Stand 462A), will be exhibiting for the first time the Borg and Beck 10-in, integral main-drive clutch and power take-off. The component provides independent control from one pedal of the drive to the wheels and power take-off.

The unit consists of two separate clutches mounted in tandem,within a single pressed-steel cover bolted to the flywheel_ The cover contains the main and intermediate plates and is ,designed to assist heat dissipation.

Both clutches are actuated by a single ball-thrust release mechanism. The clutch nearer the flywheel controls the drive to the power take-off, the outer clutch operating the main drive through a hollow shaft enclosing the power-takeoff shaft. With the clutch pedal in the free position both main and power-takeoff clutches arc engaged. With the pedal depressed to an intermediate position the main-drive clutch is disengaged; full depression disengages both clutches.

Chaseside Engineering Co., Ltd., Hertford, will display the latest version of their Loadmaster 700 loading shovel on Stand 292, Scoops are available with

nominal capacities of *, I, 11 and 2 cu. yd. The machine exerts a pry-.out force of 9,000 lb. at the toe plate arid lifts to its full height in 54 sec. The engine is a 52-h.p. Fordson oiler, driving. through an 11-in, clutch, gearbox and auxiliary giving six forward and two reverse speeds.
