Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

INTENSIVE development of plastics I bodywork and cabs is being undertaken by the Wincanton Transport and Engineering . Co., Ltd., 26 Courtenay Road, Woking, Surrey. Their most outstanding achievement so far is a milkdelivery body for the .Morris L.D.2 30-cwt. chassis-.

It weighs about 30 cwt. and is stated to be some 6 cwt. lighter than an equivalent timber body. Finished in primer and mounted, it costs £335. A light-alloy floor costs £15 extra and a two-colour impregnated finish for the glass-fibre body adds £25 to the price. A de luxe Model with chromium-plated fittingsis offered at £395.

The Morris scuttle assembly is retained and is mated to glass-fibre bodywork made in four main sections—roof, side valances and rear. The one-piece roof, measuring about 12 ft. by 6 ft., is generously domed and incorporates gutters and cant-rails, with metal jointing plates bonded into it.

Each side valance, made also in one piece, extends from the rear of the cab door opening to a point just behind the rear axle. Three metal brackets bonded into it are secured to the chassis crossmembers.

The valance is swaged at the bottom for strength and is secured at the front by woodscrews. It incorporates a recessed panel over the rear axle to accommodate the standard Milk Marketing Board display poster. The top edge is capped with metal.

The rear assembly comprises the roofhigh side panels aft of the valances, the rear panel and a grocery compartment 6 ft. wide, 3 ft. high and 1 ft. 10 in. deep, all moulded in one piece. The comrlartment is reached through two

glass-fibre donrs, with deep windows, in the near panel and has a display window on each side.

Its light-metal floor is carried on a frame bonded into the glassfibre panels. There are also two expanded-metal shelves supported by eight vertical lightalloy members bonded into the front and rear panels and contained in framework similarly bonded, so that the whole compartment is extremely rigid.

The rear panel incorporates recesses for number plate and lights and flashing indicators, and a large reversing window above the grocery compartment. Joints between the body sections are sealed by T rubber strip.

Glass-fibre is used also for the sliding doors of the cab, which .run on ball races in the upper track and on an underslung lower track lined with belting to prevent chatter. The doors are made in two matching moulds and form a double-box design consisting of inner and outer skins bonded together. They are light but rigid and can be held Open •or closed in double-ball catches, • There is a wooden shelf for papers above the windscreen. Wood is used also for the cab partition and for the flOor (unless. light alloy is specified). A light fitting is moulded into the centre of the cab roof.

The deck can carry 60 era tet of pint bottles and is on two levels, giving loading heights of 2 ft. 6 in.. and 3 ft:2 in.

Another new development is a glass-fibre cab for the A.E.C. Mammoth. It consists of three main sections—roof, back and front----assembled in a jig. The metal frame of the floor is bonded to it and the assembly is mounted on rubber , at four points.

Perspex is used foil two-large triangular windows in therear panel and for the quarters of the wrap-round windscreen, the main panels of which are of toughened glass. A destination box is built into the roof. .

Rubber sealing covers the joint between the floor, mounted on the chassis, and the cab structure. The wings are Part of the glass-fibre assembly and incorporate a two-piece mud flap, one part of which is integral with the wing and the other bolted to it. Small front sections above and below the radiator are bolted and are easily detachable. The brackets for • the front bumper and towing eyes pass through the lower section.

Hinged glass-fibre doors are made in two matched mouldings and incorporate drop windows inserted from the bottom. They arc so light that only two hinges are required.

Wincanton are building plastics cabs . also for Harbilt and Wales and Edwards vehicles, and fott the popular makes of agricultural tractor.

They also produce their own decorative transfers in several colours by the silk-screen process.
