FA.A HEAVY decline in general haulage in Co. Durham resulting from -hirepurchase restrictions was one of the reasons advanced by W. Coxon, Ltd., Annfield Plain, when they sought a larger vehicle on 'A licence at Newcastle upon Tyne, last week.

For the .company, Mr. W. S. Benson said they wanted to replace a vehicle of 3* tons by one of 4 tons 19 cwt. He said they were now carrying 60 per cent. steel and 40 per cent. general tflffic, Answering Mr. J. L. R. Croft, for the British Transport Commission, he agreed that the company had begun to develop the carriage of steel only after buying a special-A-licence lorry in 1954. He also agreed that on the larger vehicle a payload of 9 tons could be carried, compared with 6 tons on the existing lorry.

The Northern Licensing Authority, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, adjourned the case so that more detailed figures could be pro duced. He remarked that from the evidence it would appear that the company were now almost exclusively devoted to steel haulage.
