Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW compact power-steering unit for heavy Vehicles has been introduced by Bouiton Paul Aircraft, Ltd., Wolverhampton. It is a self-contained assembly, designed to replace an existing manual steering column aild box, and is intended for operation with an enginedriven hydraulic pump and a reservoir.

The unit is cylindrical in general outline and the upper section consists of an "input assembly," which carries the steering wheel on a hollow shaft. This shaft is formed into a nut at its lower end, inside which runs a reversible-worm. The worm moves axially when the wheel is turned, and so actuates the controlvalve piston, which is located above the actuator ram. The lower end of the ram is formed into an eye which can be connected to the steering drop-arm through a rocking lever.

Using their aircraft experience, Boulton Paul have incorporated a "feel " system into the gear to impart a proportionate amount of road-wheel load to the steering wheel. Should a hydraulic failure occur, manual steering is retained.

BUS WITH AIR-COOLED ENGINE IS QUIET

REMARKABLY quiet running is claimed for the Guy. Arab 56-seater in which a Deutz air-cooled engine has been fitted by the Gosport and Fareham Omnibus Co., Ltd. As forecast in The Commercial Rotor on May 23, the bus is now in regular service. Special soundproofing material has been employed.

No difficulty was found in fitting the engine, and the Deutz clutch is light and smooth in operation. Fuel and oil consumption are stated to be "quite up to the average of the company's fleet," and it is hoped that its maintenance costs will be 15 per cent. lower than those of other engines.

It is claimed that the Deutz engine can be overhauled in half the time required for a water-cooled unit of similar output.

ADDITIVE FROM SEWAGE

ADETERGENT additive for engine oil may be derived from industrial effluent at the Esholt sewage works of Bradford Corporation. Local mills use much detergent for wool scouring.

The corporation are making arrangements with Cyanamid (Great Britain), Ltd., a subsidiary of the big American Cyanamid concern, to produce the additive. A pilot plant has been established at Esholt.
