application to amalgamate the Robinson group of excursion licences covering the main towns in East Lancashire was heard by the North Western Traffic Commissioners at Manchester on

Tuesday. There were objections by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd.; W. C. Standerwick, Ltd.; British Railways; and Bolton Corporation. Hoidens Tours (0swaidtwistle), Ltd., and Ribblesdale Coachways, Ltd., made representations in support.

Mr. H. Backhouse,. for the applicants, said they wanted to meet the CommissiOners' disapproval of unofficial linking. The. Robinson group, which included Ashlunds Tours, Ltd., and Broughton and Walker, Ltd., sought to surrender their existing excursion licences and obtain a comprehensive licence in the name of W. Robinson and Sons (Great Harwood), Ltd. They would be based at Blakewater Coach Station, Blackburn, with three feeder services, including most of the present picking-up points. There would not be separate fares.

The feeder services originating from Great 1--larwood, Darwen and Feniscowles would cover Accrington, Church, Oswaldtwistle, Langho, Whalley and Clitheroe. The vehicle allowance, nine on any day and 18 at local and general

holidays, was an aggregate of the 'existing allowances. .

Mr. A. Robinson, in evidence, said operators in the north-west were at a loss as to what they could. do about unauthorized linking. They knew the Commissioners' views, but it was impossible to make a living otherwise.

Questioned by Mr. P. Kershaw, for British Railways, he agreed that since acquiring the shares of Ashlund and Broughton and Walker in 1947, catchment area linking between his three companies had been a common practice.

The . chairman. Mr. F. Williamson, pointed out that Mr. Backhouse held an opposite view to the Commissioners as to the legality of certain aspects of linking. . If. the application were granted, they still would not know where they stead unless a clause was inserted stop ping further unauthorized linking.

Mr. Kershaw submitted that the extent of. the linking was an indication that the vehicle allowance was too great. With cross linking between companies the bigger the group. the greater was the: advaritage. If -there was to be a grant, the allowance should be reduced and , bigger loads would-be carried onfewer vehicles, The hearing continued.
