• The steering column assembly has universal joints and a support bearing. To test the joints for stiffness jack the front axle, turn the engine off and move the steering wheel lock-to-lock.
If a UJ has tightened up there will be two stiff spots at each full turn of the column. Another method is tilt the cab until the column's nearly vertical then see if the stiffness has gone when you turn the steering wheel.
To test the support bearing lower the vehicle and, with the engine turned off, yank on the steering wheel then just as quickly release it. If the wheel springs back the bearing's OK; if not it will probably need freeing off.
