Leyland Daf's 85 Series 8x4 is no newcomer to the scene but its popularity has increased as it has become established. It does not appear to have any major inherent faults. Now, with lower powered trucks less in demand, the 85CF base model starts at 34ohp which leaves power in reserve for most applications. The cab, mounted high on the chassis, is certainly big enough to suit on/offroad applications. And, with straight front axles and a robust rear end, the 85 Series is equally suited to heavy muckaway and aggregate work. It's not particularly light but the Dots driveline is rock solid. The engines run and run, but the latest versions offer the best fuel returns. The Eaton eight-speed synchro box is considered the best fleet option, although the TwinSplitter is still popular. Used versions of the 85CF 8x4 are in demand but few operators replace them early, so they are not easy to come by. For many operators Dafs aftersales backup is often the deciding factor.
