Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DOWER-ASSISTED steering is now offered as 1 an optional extra, on all Big Bedford models. The Girling hydraulic system is used, and its application will be seen at this year's Commercial Motor Show, which opens on September 21. Another innovation to he introduced for the Show is a new high-ratio axle for all models in the 4-ton to 7-ton and passenger ranges-.

The Girling mechanism consists of an enclosed hydraulic cylinder, pivoted to the steering drag link and carrying a double-acting piston. This piston is anchored to the chassis frame by a ball-jointed rod. The steering drop arm is connected to a bobbin valve housed in the end of the power cylinder. A large pre-compressed spring, which centralizes the valve, gives direct connection between the drop arm and the drag link in the event of power failure.

The movement of the valve is so slight as to have little effect on the steeringwhen operated Without power. Other components in the system consist of an engine-driven rotary oil purrin and a hydraulic reservoir. The pump is mounted above the dynamo and is driven by twin, V-belts. With the engine running, power assistance for turns is provided by the movement of the bobbin valve after the spring has been Compressed. The resistance of the spring is sufficient to give a full amount of " feel in the steering. Girling hydraulic steering is available on all Big Bedford chassis of all wheel bases and on the passenger chassis. The fist price is £38, which carries £9 10s. purchase tax.

The new high-ratio axle is available for petrolor oilengincd models, and has a ratio of 5.28 to 1. There are now four axle ratios from which to choose. The new ratio is recommended principally for passenger and light-goodsvehicle operators and for use in level country.

Anti-rust moulded-rubber covers for fitting to the frOnt wheel-arches of Bedford 10-12-cwt. vehicles are also announced. These covers are supplied with screws at a cost of 10s. 6d., and are designed to protect the wheel-arches from scratches and eventual rusting.
