AN appeal has been lodged by Reed Transport, Ltd., the transport company of the Reed paper-manufacturing group, against the South-Eastern Licensing Authority's refusal of an A licence for 12 additional vehicles, and of permission to substitute larger types for six specified uncle. special A licences.

The case was reported in The Commercial Motor dated May 18, and the Authority's written decision on June 1.

Mr. Gerald Thesiger, Q.C., has been retained by the company.

NO TUNNELS OR BRIDGES • WITHOUT TOLLS fiAJOR schemes for new tunnels and IV/ bridges will not now be approved • unless the authorities concerned are prepared to allow the levy of tolls. The Minister of Transport said this, last week, before the National Production Advisory Council for Industry.

The Minister said that in speeding up road traffic he was inclined to pay as much attention to small as to large schemes.

Forty large projects were in hand, and .a further 40 would be started before the• end of the year. The cost to the Exchequer of works authorized in the fiscal year 1956-57 would be £34.5m. For 1955-56, it would be £28m.

AUSTIN COACH CHASSIS

ACOACH chassis has been introduced by the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., and the main demand for it is expected to be from the overseas markets. Standard service 44-seat and luxury 3040-seat bodies have been built and tested on the new chassis, power units available for which are the B.M.C. six-cylindered petrol engine and the B.M.C. sixcylindered oil engine.

An Eaton two-speed axle is an optional extra. The chassis will be available in c.k.d. packs for certain markets.

OUTPUT AND EXPORTS UP

THE production of commercial vehicles rose from 32,129 in June, 1955, to 33,040 last month. Exports rose from 8,454 in June, 1955, to 13,376 for the same month this year. June's output comprised 32,106 goods vehicles and 934 public service vehicles. Exports in June consisted of 12,999 goods vehicles and 377 public service vehicles.

GERMAN OUTPUT RISES

IN the first half of this year,. German vehicle output increased by about a quarter compared with that of the first six months of 1955. Between January and June, 77,897 lorries, 32,022 station wagons, 343 mechanical horses and 2,648 buses were produced.

The Henschel concern, of Kassel, stated this week that they were to dismiss 400 of their 10,000 workers. A spokesman said that sales difficulties were attributable partly to recent limits on vehicle size in Western Germany.
