Brief Details of a Well-appointed Coach Delivered to a Prominent Company for Scottish Tours. 0

WE have, on several occasions in the past, referred to the activities of Continental Motorways, Ltd., who ran, as many of our readers will be aware, a number of tours to historic and beauty spots abroad, as well as several of a select nature in Great Britain. For this work the company employ a fleet of high-grade Coaches, and this has recently been added to by the purchase of thr luxurious Dennis all-weather vehicle which is illustrated on this page.

It is an absolute essential for longdistance tours of the class undertaken by the company's vehicles that the maximum of riding comfort should be given. Aforeover, the dependability of the vehicle must never be in doubt, for it spends a large proportion of its time in threading its way off the beaten track where adequate facilitieS for the execution of repair work do not exist, and where replacement parts are often unobtainable.

These circumstances are certainly met in the new vehicle which has 'been supplied by Dennis Bros., Ltd., of Guildford, for not only is it designed to give every passenger the utmost comfort and thus prevent a long road journey from becoming wearisome, but there is no tloubt as to the mechanical dependability of the vehicle, since the chassis is of a type which is giving excellent service to a large number of users in all parts of the wotld.

Only in one respect does the chassis of this coach differ from the maker's standard model of this type. In place ef the usual 30-55 h.p. engine, a power unit is fitted which is capable of developbig 70 b.h.p. ; the useof this high-power unit ensures the severest gradients in mountainous country being safely negotiated. This Dennis chassis has a wheel-base of 15 ft, and the outstanding features which render it admirable for passenger work are long and flexible springs and pneumatic tyres of large section

The handsome saloon body with which the vehicle is fitted • is the product of Hall, Lewis and Co., Ltd., 14, Cockspur Street, London, S.W.1. It is a fine piece of work, and the roomy in terior is arranged to accommodate 16 persons in addition to the driver, arrangements being made for two of them to sit beside the driver. The seats on the off-side are built in pairs, whilst those on the near-side each accommodate one person ; they all face in the forward direction, and are, of the armchair pattern. As is customary on vehicles run by Continental Motorways, Ltd.; a folding table is provided in front of each seat, on which tea can be served. Reference maps, showing the route being traversed, can be placed below the glass which covers each table.

As this type of vehicle is often used in countries with varying climates, the question of ventilation has receited thorough attention. The windows on each side, with the exception of a fixed D section at the rear, are made to drop into the body sides. Furthermore. by the fitting of two ventilators in the roof and the incorporation of two sliding sections, the occupants of the interior are assured an amply supply of fresh air whatever the condition of the weather. When the sliding sections are opened out and the windows lowered. the vehicle is, to all intents and purposes, of the open type. The side lights are each covered by a spring blind, which gives protection against the glare of the sun, and when all the blinds are pulled down and the lights switched on the interior is more suggestive of a comfortable and restful club room in miniature than the body of a motor vehicle.

At the near-side rear corner a miniature buffet is fitted up, and it is here that afternoon tea for passengers is prepared en route, and this can be served on the vehicle, or picnics can intersperse the meals at get times at hotels.

Prior to the commencement of each tour Continental Motorways, Ltd., provide each passenger with'a special trunk, measuring 3% ins. by 16 ins. by 8 ins., and these are accommodated in rain. proof and dustproof lockers fitted below the running boards on each side of the vehicle.

This Dennis coach is scheduled for Scottish tours, for which it should be ideally suited by reason of the sumptuousness of the arrangements made for passengers' comfort.
