THE FREIGHT Transport Association (FTA) has welcomed the Scottish government’s decision to trial new road-salting measures in the wake of this winter’s disruption, but wants a more comprehensive appraisal of how Scotland coped during the severe weather.
Chris MacRae, FTA head of policy for Scotland, says: “An all-embracing review of the failings and the successes over the last two months is needed so lessons can be learned.
“The scale of disruption faced by Scotland’s supply chain in the pre-Christmas snowfall was unprecedented and many companies are still counting the costs.” The FTA has also warned that the Scottish government should not concentrate too narrowly on its cost-benefit assessment of ‘winter tyres’.
“While the FTA is happy to help inform the debate, we remain a bit concerned that this assessment by the government should not become just a focus on winter tyres as if it is some form of silver bullet to the issue of snow or ice on roads – because it isn’t,” MacRae says.
