to provide better support for its customers and easier maintenance and service, but Atlas Terex has leapt ahead by using telemetrics for fault diagnosis.

Called ACM-Manager, the remote diagnostics system can identify and repair electronic faults on cranes in operation, and once further field tests are completed, the device should become available to its dealers around April.

The program allows a service engineer to interrogate the main board of its 2-series cranes, download onto a notebook via a trunk cable and return the data to the factory via the Internet.

Appropriate settings are returned for uploading onto the crane and the technician can adjust the machine settings and fix the fault.

In the past decade since EC markings were introduced, electronics have proved extremely reliable, while at the same time, crane performance and capability have become increasingly sophisticated.

But as the equipment becomes more specialised, operative training schemes clearly have to become more specific.

For its part, the Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers and Importers provides the appropriate training and accreditation necessary to meet both the crane operators requirements and HSE standards.

Our training standards group which develops the schemes are made up of representatives from all the major importers," says ALLMI Training's Tom Wakefield.

'There are some very good training and accreditation services in the plant and construction industry," he adds, but ours is the only one that deals specifically with truck-mounted cranes."
