Reading your article "Look & Learn" on "...the impossibility of knowing good fitters" ( CM 25 Nov-1 Dec 1999) it struck me that maybe the term "fitter" could put some potential employees off.
Is the term "mechanic" old fashioned? Certainly the term "workshop technician" carries more perceived status. Having served a traditional apprentice
ship during the '60s I would have resented the term "fitter". A fitter just fitted new parts—a mechanic (or technician) diagnoses faults, can repair mechanical units and also fits new parts.
If our industry wants new, qualified people we need to provide the training and give the reward of reasonable pay and recognition of achievements. Alan Warwick, Dolphin Leasing, Hen's.
