Volvo V90 ambulance Tata to the rescue!
• by Colin Barnett The traditional van-based ambulance is being threatened by Volvo's car-based V90. Wiltshire and Oxfordshire ambulance authorities have already bought 10 examples between them, with others currently carrying out trials.
Built by Volvo Car Special Vehicles, the V90's spec includes an BOOmm chassis extension, self-levelling suspension and air-conditioning. Power is provided by a 204hp, three-litre petrol straight-six driving through a four-speed automatic gearbox and a lockable diff.
The rear compartment has an interior height of 1.46m and carries everything needed for advanced patient care, including an attendant's seat. The driving seat is designed to minimise back problems during long shifts.
The Wiltshire service claims that compared with traditional ambulances, average response times have improved by six minutes thanks to the car-like levels of performance and handling. British sales are handled by UK Rescue, already established as supplier of specially equipped Volvos for BASICS emergency response doctors.
