Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Juliet Parish • Wincanton Transport has guaranteed annual pay increases in line with inflation for 80 drivers working on its Esso bitumen and industrial/ wholesale work for the next three years.

Starting next month, the Unigate subsidiary will put the tanker drivers on index-linked pay, over which their union will have no negotiating power.

however pay talks between the company and the Transport & General Workers Union will be re-introduced once the threeyear agreement between them has lapsed. In the meantime, Wincanton Transport will continue to recognise the TGWU for driver grievances, disciplinary matters and safety issues.

The drivers affected by the deal are based at Birmingham, Hythe in Hampshire, Avonmouth and Manchester. All of them have been put on individual contracts, but they have the same terms and conditions, says the company.

It refuses to give any more details of the contracts, apart from adding that they "provide further flexibility to meet the developing needs of our customer."
