• The threat of stoppages continued to hang over P&O European Ferries services out of Felixstowe and Cairnryan this week as the company and the seafarers union RMT carried on negotiations over pay.
lf this week's talks fail to improve the proposed changes to the terms and conditions for crews, RMT does not rule out bringing in 48-hour stoppages on the Felixstowe to Zeebrugge and Cairnryan to Lame routes.
P&O however appeared confident of a settlement. The RMT threatened to impose stoppages in December but pulled back after taking legal advice. Since then another ballot has resulted in 319 to 36 voting for industrial action to block the company's proposals.
