• A Conservative-led council is challenging Government plans to introduce three-lane link roads to take local traffic off the M25, claiming they will be under-used for most of the day.
Instead, Runnymede Borough Council and a group of 12 Tory MPs, have submitted a series of
proposals to free traffic flow on the motorway at peak times.
Their discussion paper calls for priority lanes for cars with a "high occupancy" of passengers, motorway pricing, better enforcement of lane discipline, lower speed limits and speed cameras. The proposals, which the council believes will not need primary legislation to be introduced, have been submitted to transport minister John MacGregor. They could be picked up in an early day motion or transport questions to the minister.
