• Renault Vehicules Industriels (RV1) has developed an automatic clutch control system for use in distribution vehicles and other stop/start applications. The ACS system was designed during the mid-1980s for use with Renault's electronic gear control system, TBV. French field trials led RVI to uncover a ready market for ACS among refuse collection and distribution operators. Today there are more than 500 units operating throughout the country.
Competing
There are plenty of competing auto clutch systems available including one from France's own Valeo. All follow the same basics: electronics control a conventional three-piece clutch assembly. Almost none of the driveline hardware is altered, ensuring compatibility with single and twin-plate designs. There are no added maintenance complications.
Renault launched ACS in Britain at last year's Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) show, where it appeared in a Manager G230ti.18D 17tonner. Commercial Motor has rigid to test ACS under crosscountry running.
