Y about 50 per cent, of their total operating costs, hauliers throughout the United States are closely watching negotiations on pay and conditions now in progress between the Midwest Teamster Union—for the lorry drivers—and representatives of some 4,500 Middle West hauliers employing about 150,000 men. Eventually, with the outcome of the negotiations setting the pattern for nation-wide settlements, more than 500,000 drivers and other workers wiil he involved.

Most hauliers are saying that if the suggested nay increases come into effect.. they cannot be borne by the industry. while one big group maintains that carriage rates must be increased by 5 to 7 per cent. over a three-year period if the industry is to be enabled to meet the Union's demands.
