TT seems that sales in the shops have ...been. good so far this year, and, in consequence, an increased flow of business from manufacturers to wholesalers and from them to retailers is to be anticipated in the near future.

North-east Coast.

There are prospects of further activity in the shipbuilding industry, whilst the iron and steel trade shows definite signs of improvement. Durham County Works Committee has approved a schedule of .road and bridge works proposed to be undertaken during the year ending March, 1934, and to cost over £700,000. Work is proceeding at Gateshead on the erection of 116 houses on the Harlow Green Estate.

Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Ltd, Wallsend, is to start building a rivetless oil barge with a capacity of 1,000 tons. M. Jackson (Clothiers), Ltd., of Clayton Street, Newcastle-onTyne, is to build newbranch premises at Chester-le-Street, Ashington, Hexham, Darlington and South Shields. The Washington Coal Co. is to proceed with the rebuilding of its premises at Usworth Hall (Co. Durham), which were recently destroyed by fire.

Yorkshire.

The trade in special and stainless steels in the Sheffield district is improving. A. new process for the manufacture of machine cutting tools has been developed by Old Park Forge, Ltd., Sheffield. The local light-castings industry in the Sheffield district is improving. Hull Corporation is going ahead with an amended scheme for the Humber Bridge. Home-trade inquiry in the woollen industry is better, and there is a steady and growing demand for rayon fabrics.

There is a feeling of confidence in Middlesbrough that a gradual improvement in the iron and steel trade is shortly to be experienced.

Bainbridge, Ltd., Doncaster, is to build 100 houses on the Green Lane housing estate for Rawmarsh Urban District Council, whilst 50 houses are to be erected on the South Back Lane estate by Bridlingtou Town Council.

Lancashire.

The demand for cotton piece goods is extending steadily, the home trade is livening up, and there is an increasing business for Empire trade. The demand for leather is on the up grade, according to reports from Runcorn, Wallington and Liverpool.

Hindley Urban District Council is to build 84 houses, whilst a further block of houses is to be erected by Bebbington and Bromborough Urban District Council. Premises have been acquired in Wigton, Cumberland, by the British New Wrap Co., Ltd., for the manufacture of paper. Messrs. Rimmer and Forster are to build 104 houses off Cherry Tree Lane, Marton' The Fylde. Blackpool Town Council is to spend 1150,000 on indoor baths.

Midlands.

The cold spell is helping retailers and wholesalers to dispose of their stocks of heavy underwear, and a demand for replenishment has already arisen and will grow if the cold weather continues. After that, according to manufacturers' anticipations, the bathingcostume trade is likely to become active. Makers of light castings in the Birmingham area are busy and there is increased activity in hardware.

Messrs. Hobson and Sons, Newark Street Works, Nottingham, are to erect 50 houses on the Middlefield Lane estate for Hinckley Urban District Council. Dudley Town Council is to erect 214 houses on the Priory estate. Shipstonon-Stour (Worcs.) Rural District Council is to build houses at Ilmington. Leicester is to have a new bus garage.

The moving of 750,000 tons of earth will shortly be 'necessary at Corby, Northants, where great new steel works are proposed to be constructed.

Wales.

A sugar-beet factory is to be erected som,ewhere near Milford Haven, and contracts have already been made for the growing of upwards of 1,000 acres of beet in Pembrokeshire.

Cardiff Housing and Town Planning Committee is applying for sanction for another 200 houses. The Baldwin concern has received a large order for castiron pipes, which will be made at the Landore works. The coal trade in South Wales is still quite active.

Barry Urban District Council has received tenders for the erection of 102 houses on the Buttrills housing estate. Scotland.

Scotts' Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. has an order for a passenger and cargo steamer. Barclay, Curie and Co., Glasgow, is supplying two large sets of Diesel engines for a ship which is to be built on the Tyne.

L. W. Stewart and Co., 72, Waterloo Street, Glasgow, is to build 138 houses, for the corporation, on the Garngad housing estate. Messrs. H. MacDougall are to build 174 houses at Calton and 132 at Balmore Road, for Glasgow Corporation. Paisley Town Council is to erect 354 houses on the Barterholm site and 256 at Gallowhill.

Dumfries County Council is proposing to construct a new bridge across the Dryfe, north of Lockerbie, whilst Dundee Town Council is considering proposals for the construction of a bridge across the railway, near Roodyards. A scheme of slum clearance and demolition in the Bell Street and Wellwynd area is proposed by Airdrie Town Council, which intends to build 132 new houses on the site.

London and Home Counties.

The Bermondsey leather market is active, the demand increasing.

The St. Pancras House Improvement Society is to erect two more blocks of flats at the west end of Sidney Street, the approximate cost being £26,900. Maidenhead Town Council is to build a school at North Town, at a cost of £26,607. Aylesbury Rural Distriet Council has approved plans for 60 houses to be built.

Brentford and Chiswick Urban District Council is to go ahead with the Church Walk housing scheme. Messrs. J. Laing and Son are to build 499 houses on the Whitehurch Lane estate, Great Stanmore. It is hoped to make a start in February with the erection of 120 houses on land in Bobbing Road, Sittingbourne. Messrs. G. Walker and Slater Uttoxeter Old Road, Derby, are to build 200 houses on the Whitley housing estate for Reading Town CounciL
