Wisdom of Replacing Old Vehicles.

In his annual report, Mr. B. C. Hammond, county surveyor of Worcester, states that the cost of mechanical haulage for the past year averaged 30.27$d. per ton and 4.223d. per mile, including provision for the wages of drivers, steersmen and loaders, fuel, stores, depreciation, repairs, renewals, registration and insurance charges.

A Thornycroft 2i-ton, a Leyland 3ton and two Leyland 5-ton petrol lorries were purchased at the beginning of the year to replace five old steam wagons. These new machines soon confirmed the wisdom of the policy of replacing old units. The two smaller vehicles proved successful on the particular purpose for B24 which they were bought, namely, work on unclassified roads directly maintained, whilst the two larger lorries operated most economically.

The foregoing figures refer solely to transport operated entirely by the department and do not include the transport vehicles operated by the delegated rural authorities.

Karrier Bus Chassis for South Africa.

In our issue dated October 28 we published preliminary details relating to the order obtained by Karrier Motors, Ltd., for the supply of 10 double-deck chas-sis of the Monitor type to the Johannesburg municipality. The company now advises us that the chassis are being shipped.

The six-cylindered petrol engines of Karrier make embodied in six of the chassis are interchangeable with the six-cylindered Gardner oil engines incorporated in the remainder. The former type has a bore of 100 mm. and a stroke of 140 ram. and develops 110 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m., whilst the oil units have a •bore of 4-1 ins., a stroke of 6 ins, and develop 103 b.h.p. at the maximum governed speed of 1,700 r.p.m. A further feature of interest, and one that can be discerned from an accompanying picture, is that straightline transmission is employed in conjunction with an off-set worm drive, in which the worm is uuderslung.

The chassis are exceptionally well sprung, the front springs measuring 3 ft. 8 ins. between centres, mid those at the rear 5 ft., and they incorporate hydraulic shock absorbers.

The chassis have been built to carry 60-seater bodies, which will be constructed by Johannesburg bodybuilders. The wheelbase of each chassis has been extended to 17 ft., and the completed vehicles will have an overall length of 27 ft.

A Warning to Kettering Hauliers.

Kettering haulage contractors are being reminded by the urban district council of the damage caused by heavy lorries drawing on to footpaths for the purpose of delivering goods at factories and other premises. In the event of any further damage being done it is the council's intention to take legal action.
