279.—A New Timer with Excellent Features.

Efficiency. combined with simplicity, and long life may be said to constitute the main features of the new Karslyfe timer manufactured by C. H. Snwerby, 45, Bedford Row, London, W.C.1.

This timer has been designed to overcome weak nesses which sometimes occur in the standard form of distributor. The construction can be seen almost at a glance by referring to the illustration. The rotor cdnsists of a large ball race mounted upon an eccentric gunmetal bush which is fixed to the end of the camshaft in place of the existing device. The ball race is kept in positive contact with the fibre ring and segments of the case by pressure derived from a small coil spring fitted between the inner ring of the ball race and the gunmetal brush. The fitting is quite a simple matter and, once fitted, tests have shown that after 10,000 miles timers of this type are still in perfect condition, for

i

there s pure rolling contact and, consequently, an almost entire absence. of friction.

One advantage is that the spring pressure ensures electrical contact, and it is practically impossible to cause misfiring through over-oiling. The price of the device, ready for immediate fitting, is 22s. 6d.

280.—The New Ford Accessories—Windscreen Wiper, Dash-light, Emergency Kit, etc.

A short time ago it was announced that the Ford Motor Co., of Detroit, had determined to devote a [art of its plant to the manufacture of accessories. Particulars of these new activitieS are now to hand. The Ford windshield wiper is so constructed that the rubber strip is at all times held firmly against the glass. This is accomplished by flattening and bending the upper part of the outside arm holding the wiper. The result is that a spring effect is secured which eliminates vibration. The_steel handle with polished white-metal grip is, of course, inside the windshield, and when not in use may be left horizontal to the point where the bearing passes through the window. When so placed it is out of the way and cannot interfere with the vision of the driver. The hole drilled in the windshield glass, to connect the wiper, carries a metal bushing to protect the glass from chipping or cracking.

i The Ford dash light s neat, compact and durable, and is finished in black enamel to match the instrument panel. A feature of this accessory is the manner in which the base of the light is let into the panel instead of simply being fastened to the surface. This holds it firmer and eliminates all possibility of it ever shaking loose. The bulb is a 6-6-volt 2-candle-power, the same as the one carried in the standard tail lamp. The e witch is in the base of the lamp, and by applying spring tension to it the light may be kept on or off without interference from vibration.

The Ford rear vision mirror attaches to the windshield header, and, by an ingenious arrangement, a one-wing nut not only permits adjustment to any position, but also locks it when the adjustment has been made. The mirror is made by silvering the quality plate-glass manufactured by the company, and is held firmly in the frame by two adjustable felt-covered clamps. The new Ford emergency kit contains two headlight bulbs, a tail-light bulb, a sparking, plug, and a tube repair outfit. The selling price of these accessories is not yet available.

281.—Facilitating the Entry of the Universal Joint Square.

Considerable difficulty is sometimes experienced when replacing either the engine or rear axle of the Ford in position in the chassis, owing to the small clearance for the square on the front portiasia of the universal joint, which has to enter a corresponding square hole in the transmission driving plate. The task may be facilitated by bevelling the entering edges of the squared portion on all sides, as shown in the accompanying illustration. The bevelled portion will give the square a star, and replacement will become a simple and quick process. It is, of course, necessary that the parts should be a very good fit, otherwise untlesirabla backlash will be present.
