Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Sa i nsb ury City Diesel/Greenergy City Diesel has come out top in Commercial Motor's fuel survey (page 32).

Despite industry concerns over the fuel's lubricity and calorific value arising from its ultra-low sulphur level, its HFRR wear scar of 288 microns was easily within the European maximum standard for lubricity of 460 microns. Its gross calorific value was 45.98MJ/kg (the average figure was 45,7M/kg).

The Sainsbury fuel also had an outstanding cold-weather performance and a creditable cetane index of 53. Only Shell's index of 54 beat this figure.

Operators currently using Greenergy City Diesel include TDG Williams Distribution, The Lane Group (for its Body Shop operation), Stora Transport, and J Sainsbury.

TDG Williams Distribution has been using the fuel on its Tetra Pak contract since the

beginning of 1995. Contract manager Anthony Holme says: We made the change to City Diesel due to Tetra Pak's concern with the environment. This involved changing the pumps at our depot and increasing the capacity of the tanks on our Volvo FL1Os so they could do a full run without needing to refuel.

"We have monitored the particulate emissions and seen a significant improvement," he adds. 'The only cons are that it is slightly more expensive and the availability outside our depot is a bit of a problem. The issue of fuel economy hasn't raised its head yet although we are still wary of that."

Kevin Pendergast, head of fleet management for the Lane Group. says: "The only problem we've had is with the extra cost. But as far as Body Shop is concerned they are happy because of the lower emissions."
