HENDERSON, Minst.T., Scottish Licensing Authority, recently accepted an invitation to become a fulltime member of the Road Transport Executive of the British Transport Commission. MR. R. ASKHAM has been appointed a director of the Deighton Motor Co., Ltd., Sheffield.

Hoomt-rut. For the seventh year. MR. T. A. LOVELL has been elected chairman of the Peterborough section of the South-East Midland Div isipn of the M.A.A.

SIR Witiiam Rooms, K.B.E., chairman of the Rootes group, accompanied by his son, MR. BRIAN Rooms, has left for a further tour of the United States, and will visit Canada, the Caribbean and various South American countries, in the cause of British exports. Incidentally new Commer 5and 7-tonners are aheadbeing exported to America. Before leaving. Sir William stressed the need for a reduction of prices and for more steel for the industry to permit it to work to capacity.

SIR WILLIAM J. THOMSON, who built up the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., out of nothing, was entertained at a private farewell dinner in Edinburgh, last week, on the eve of his departure for a two months' trip to the United States and the Bahamas. He recalled that his most momentous decision was when he scrapped 1,000 petrol engines with a stroke of the pen in favour of oil engines. At that time there was no duty on heavy oils, and the change-over paid for itself handsomely.

TALK ON MAINTENANCE AT a meeting of the Scottish centre of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers to be held in the Engineers' and Shipbuilders' Hall, Glasgow, at 7.30 pm. on March 8, Mr. C. S. Lodge, A.M.I.Mech.E., of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., will speak on "The Maintenance of Motor Vehicles."
