• Spending on local roads will be increased by almost 10% to £360 million in 1987, according to the latest statement from Transport Secretary John Moore.

In addition to providing cash for 70 new road schemes and aid for 270 other projects already approved, the money will pay for the installation of crash barriers on almost every dual carriageway trunk route.

• South Midland, the former rural operating arm of City of Oxford, is expected to become the ninth NBC operating subsidiary to be sold off.
