MR. C. S. LOCK, the British Transport Commission's Press officer, is retiring after 36 years' service.

MR. SIDNEY A. WALE has been appointed chairman of C. Lindley and Co., Ltd., succeeding the late MR. THOMAS F. NASH. Mr. Wale continues as managing director. The company's new technical director is MR. LESLIE S. LEESE.

MR. E. R. DURHAM has resigned his position of assistant secretary of the Traders' Road Transport Association to join Blox Services, Ltd., Mitcham, on January 1. He was formerly personal assistant to MR. A. J. WRIGHT, Southeastern divisional manager of British Road Services.

MR. A. L. SUNDERLAND has been appointed to succeed MR. N. V. DEGVILLE as general secretary of the National Employers' Association of Vehicle Builders. Mr. Degville took up the post last August, having formerly been secretary of the Berks, Oxford and South Bucks Division of the Motor Agents' Association. He has had to return to the south of England.

MR. A. B. SMITH, chief buyer for the Rover Co., Ltd., has been appointed executive director (production and supplies co-ordination). Other appointments are: MR. 0. POPPE, Solihull works manager, to be executive director (Solihull production); MR. A. J. WORSTER, Tyseley works manager, to be executive director (Tyscley production); MR. W. R. BOYLE, chief engineer, to be executive director (engineering); and MR_ G. LLOYD DIXON, general sales manager, to be executive director (sales).

CALOR TAKE OVER CARRIERS

I-1 A LL the issued share capital of Transport Consultants,Ltd., and Vehicle Hire and Supply Co., Ltd., will be acquired by the Calor Gas Holding Co., Ltd., on Tuesday. The total consideration will be £205,000 and a fully paid-up issue of 7013.000 shares. The acquired companies have for over 10 years provided the vehicles for delivering Calor gas. Mr. W. J. A. Peck, their chairman and joint managing director, will join the board of Calor Gas, with Mr. E. D. Peck

as his alternate director. •

FOUR LANES FOR TUNNEL? rTHE Knightsbridge-Piccadilly underI pass, to be built at Hyde Park Corner, London, may after all have four traffic lanes instead of only two. Mr. Harold Watkinson, Minister of Transport, said last week that he had been so impressed by the arguments in the House of Commons in favour of providing four lanes (The Commercial Motor last week) that he was reconsidering the scheme with the London County Council. Four traffic lanes are provided in the new 720-yd. tunnel in Brussels which King Baudouin opened last week.

MORE ROADS FOR EIRE

A BOUT £240m. is to be spent by the 1-1 Eireann Government on constructing a network of trunk roads, removing urban bottlenecks and on specified smaller works. This was revealed in Dublin, last week, when it was announced that an additional £90m. had been granted for the four-year programme to begin next year.
