Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

APROTOTYPE 7-8-ton goods vehicle has been produced by Cornwall Motor Transport, Ltd., Helston, Cornwall, and is likely to be the precursor of further models in this and other payload categories. Fitted with a Bowyer cab of plastics and light alloy, it has full forward control and a wheelbase of 15 ft. 9 in. It is 26 ft. long.

A Meadows 4DC330 oil engine drives through a five-speed gearbox of the same make. Two propeller shafts are employed, that at the front having I.ayrub couplings, whilst the Layrub centre bearing is mounted on one of the frame ctoss-members and insulated by rubber.

The rear axle is a Moss spiral-bevel unit with a ratio of 6.166 to 1, but an alternative is the Eaton 16,500 series twospeed axle. Clayton-Dewandre-Girting air-hydraulic brakes arc used, those at the front having two-leading shoes. Single front and twin rear 8.25-20-in. (12-ply) tyres are fitted, 9.00-20-in. (12-ply) equipment being optional.

Bolted throughout, the chassis frame has seven cross-members, and side members 9 in. deep by 1 in. thick, with 3-in. flanges. The use of material s in. thick is under consideration. At present, a platform body 20 ft. long is supplied. The fuel tank has a capacity of 28 gal.

31,626 SPEEDING LORRY DRIVERS CONVICTED

CONVICTIONS in 1956, concerned with exceeding the speed limits for goods vehicles, rose to 31,626 compared with 22,512 in 1955. The number -of offences and alleged offences last year, at 712,962, was the highest on record, and 10.7 per cent, greater than the figure for the previous year.

This is revealed in "Offences Relating to Motor Vehicles," published last week (Stationery Office, 2s. 3d.). Revenue from fines imposed last year was £1,119,542 against £906,915 in 1955.

Dangerous loading resulted in 4,098 convictions, and exceeding the limit for public service vehicles in 2,594.
