• A lorry driver was fined £200 with £65 costs by West Bromwich magistrates for driving for more than nine or 10 hours after he wrongly believed the voyage from Calais to Dover was part of his rest period. John Cunningham of Rooney Park, Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland admitted the offence. Karen Salisbury, prosecuting, told the magistrates that a 38-tonne lorry, owned by Peter International and driven by Cunningham, was inspected at a Perry Barr site off the M6 at Birmingham on 25 January.
It was discovered that the lorry had been driven from Zurich and that Cunningham had not taken sufficient rest within a nine-hour period. Cunningham said in a letter to the court that he believed the Channel crossing was part of his rest period.
