Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• About 60% of transport workers surveyed by the Transport and General Workers Union in its Midlands region pay and working time survey earn less than 2300 a week before tax.

Of the 1,800 respondents to the survey, conducted by the Trade Union Research Union, 60% are paid hourly and 57% are paid under 25 an hour. Vehicle delivery drivers are the worse paid with 74% earning below £5 an hour. Tanker drivers earn the most, with just 14% earning under £5 an hour. The purpose of the survey is to obtain information on pay and hours worked in the light of the EC Working Time Directive, which the union can use as a basis for negotiations. Around 60% of respondents are guaranteed minimum hours of between 35-45 hours a week. Just 4% have guaranteed hours of 56 or more hours a week. Almost 20% say performance-related pay contributes to their average weekly wage and 5% receive mileage related pay. Almost half the respondents work between 10-15 hours overtime a week with 40% working some Sundays.
