by David Craik • Britain's hauliers are being urged to fight for the future of a transport cafe which is being closed by the National Trust at the end of the year.
Peter Koritsas, owner of Hill Crest Cafe on the A3 at Hindhead, Surrey, says his cafe is the only place drivers can have a "good meal at good value" and stop overnight between London and Portsmouth.
However, the National Trust, which owns the cafe's site near to Hindhead Commons, wants to limit parking facilities to cars and turn the cafe into a tearoom.
The trust says drivers have an alternative at Liphook Service Station. However one user of Hill Crest says the Liphook site is "too expensive and unfriendly".
Koritsas says a demonstration to save the cafe will take place on 2 November between the cafe and the southern regional office of the National Trust in Dorking, Surrey. "We need truckers to support this," he says. "It could be their local greasy spoon next."
His lease on the cafe ran out two years ago and it has been "carried over" since that time, says the National Trust. Koritsas has written a letter to the deputy prime minister seeking support.
