Scunthorpe crime prevention officer PC Sumner will be suggesting the scheme to members of the Road Haulage Association in Scunthorpe when they meet with police in two weeks to discuss the soaring rate in truck thefts. About £500,000 worth of trucks and goods are thought to have been stolen from the Scunthorpe area this year.

The discs, which should be visible in the dark, would have a detachable half to be removed by a driver when he leaves his vehicle. If police were to see a truck on the road displaying only one half of a disc, they would check up on it by computer or by pulling it over.

The scheme would depend on hauliers obtaining sponsorship for the printing of discs. Similar schemes have been introduced successfully in areas where commuters' cars parked at railway stations have been at risk,
