Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

'Save London's transport'

YOU ARE NO doubt well aware that the Government has recently published its proposals for a new regional transport authority for London. What you may not yet have seen are the possible consequences of the scheme contained in their White Paper.

London Regional Transport, as it would be called, would come under the direct control of the Secretary of State for Transport. Any democratic control at a local level will disappear. Financial support will be by direct Government grant, as British Rail is now. Fares could rocket overnight and service levels fall. The responsibility for concessionary fares for the elderly would transfer to the London Boroughs, forcing their rates to increase if the scheme was to remain. Bus and tube operations will be separated with possibly more sub-divisions being created later. The highly profitable services may then be sold off.

The GLC Transport Committee appreciates the invaluable work you do in drawing the attention of policy makers, operators and the public to ways in which transport in London can be improved. Consequently we would like to invite you to send up to two delegates to a "Save London's Transport" Conference on Saturday, October 8, 1983, from 2 to 5pm in the Council Chamber at County Hall, London SE1.

The Conference will be an opportunity to debate the wide implications of the Government proposals and to discuss with Transport Committee members what co-ordinated action may be taken to oppose the legislation that will devastate London's public transport.
