Hydraulic Power Employed in New Loading Device Which Can Be One-Man Operated

ADVANCED as.. we are in this country in the matter of tipping lorries, it is surprising that so little has been done with regard to loading devices of the type built into the vehicle chassis or body. For this reason, the hydraulically operated tailboard loader, just introduced by Anthony Hoists, Ltd., Braintree Road, South Ruislip, Middlesex, is of particular interest.

In its essentials the loader is comprised of the normal tailboard hinged at the bottom. After it has been dropped to the level of the body floor,`it is thereafter lowered horizontally to ground level on supporting arms. When the tailboard has been loaded, hydraulic power raises it again to body-floor level, then the load can b.: easily shifted into the vehicle.

Power to operate the standard type Anthony gear pump is obtained from the power take-off .in the usual manner, the drive to the pump being via a shaft with self-lubricating universal joints. The hydraulic cylinder, which operates the loader assembly, has an internak diameter of 5 ins., and from one of the accompanying illustrations it will be seen that the cylinder ram is directly connected to the loader.

A single lever is employed for lower ing and raising the tailboard, or it can, of course, be held in any intermediate position within its limit of travel. When the loader reaches ground level power is automatically cut off, and in the bodyfloor-level position it becomes automatically locked. The unlocking is carried out through the agency of a special lever, located close to the main control lever.

This piece of equipmeast is designed to deal with loads up to 15 cwt., there being a safety valve in the hydraulic system which acts-as a safeguard against overloading. A useful accessory to the loader is the Anthony non-skid ramp, which can be fitted to the back or to either side of the tailboard. This ramp greatly simplifies unloading and loading.

Arrangements are being made for this new loader to be available for most makes of vehicle from 30 cwt. upwards, with special equipment in the case of articulated outfits. Visitors to the Commercial Motor Show will have an opportunity of inspecting this loader on stand No. 98.
