FROZEN FOOD GIANT Iceland has asked the Transport & General Workers Union for a meeting to discuss the potential closure of a distribution centre at Deeside.

According to the local press. Iceland has threatened to close the site in 90 days unless workers accept a pay and conditions deal which the union has branded "unacceptable".

Regional industrial organiser Bryan Apsley says the pay and conditions package put fonvard by the company would mean pay cuts and changes to holiday and sick pay. Drivers would also be work ing bank holidays for normal pay. Apsley says 350 T&G members are affected.

The company has offered a sweetener in the form of a £4,000 payment if workers agree to the new terms and conditions package on the table. But Apsley says:"We are not prepared to accept the proposed terms and conditions,. Yes, we will look at ways to save money—hut not at the expense of normal living standards."

A meeting has been set up to discuss the situation this week. Iceland declined to comment.
