Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IA WITH THE FIRST DAY of May confirmed as the deadline for the fitting of digital tachographs to new trucks. Siemens VDO has revealed the lessons it has learnt from introducing digitachs to operators.

Initial training time has had to be extended and enhanced to ensure the necessary information remains with drivers, fleet managers and training providers.

Siemens Nick Rendell explains: "On-the-job training just isn't sufficient. You need training aids and classroom sessions to get the message across. With more time required, it means drivers are off the road longer using simulator and hardware techniques." Rendell suggests that trainers will have to check that drivers doing the training are actually using digitachs and not analogue tachographs.

No domestic regulations are in place to tell UK operators how to handle data management when downloading information from digitachs. With more than 2(X),(DO Siemens VDO units in service, archiving and drivers' hours have been the main sticking points.

Day-to-day use has also been an issue. In particular, adhering to Universal Standard Time has caused problems for drivers making manual changes to the unit as well as ensuring the system is on 'rest' at the right time.

Siemens warns operators: • Don't underestimate the training burden • Ensure your data management meets EU regulations • Check that drivers can operate their new digitachs and extract the correct details.
