Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The growing UK market for waste disposal services was one of the few bright spots for Waste Management International as its European and world markets came under price pressure in the first quarter of 1995.

Although business in the expanding UK waste market grew by about 25%, WIVII's sales rose only 9% to £278.7 million, while lower prices squeezed its profits down 13% to £33.7m.

As industry and legislation closes in on pollution, the UK market is likely to offer more potential for the 650 drivers employed by WMI's UK transport division UK Waste, a spokesman says.

During the year it is thought to have spent between ,ClOtn and £15m replacing 95 rear-end loaders with front-end loaders and acquired three businesses. Now it operates 1,000 trucks, tankers and waste vehicles.

Despite having to cut administration costs to maintain its margins WMI announced last week that it will sponsor all of its UK drivers to take what it claimed is the first NVC) in the road transport of waste. To gain the Level 2 qualification its skip, truck and tanker drivers will have to demonstrate operational skills and an ability to build relationships with customers.
