Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Two-piece wheel nut

INHERENT elasticity in a bolted joint is essential for maintaining clamp load under all conditions of thermal and mechanical shock. Without it, the joint will loosen and require periodic retightening.

To overcome this problem Forest Fasteners has developed a two-piece wheel nut where the radius on the nut is smaller than that of the washer.

The washer increases diameter by as much as 0.08mm which allows the nut to come into full face contact to provide mechanical lock.

The advantages claimed by the manufacturer are: *Fatigue in Wheels virtually eliminated by reducing stress raiser effect at the edge of the washer *Minimal risk of nut loosening due to wear, fretting and differen tial expansion *Accommodation of angular and spatial alignment *Consistent torque/tension relationship for safe control of stud load *Ideal for spigot mounted wheels where balance concentricity and high performance are especially important The wheel nuts are available in four styles.

Body snips

OPERATORS in the distribution industry who are worried about the possibility of front axle overloading will be interested to know about a new anchor track and shoring beam from Apex Load Control of Croydon.

The deep section stainless steel SI anchor track offers a deep 15.3mm (0.6in) top hat section that provides adequate clearance for 2,268kg (5,000Ibs) strap hooks against smooth body sides. It is available in 3m (118in) lengths.

Developed as a front, intermediate rear cross-body restraint, the new heavy duty shoring beam can be used in conjunction with sprung shoring bars. It can be used as a false bulkhead and is supplied in 2.44m (96in) lengths.

Special steel socket units have been developed to be compatible with either MUSI anchor or M2 captive tracks. Apex Load Control Company 77 Gloucester Road Croydon Surrey CRO 201

Battery operated infra-red alarm

GUARDS at lorry parks, antitheft devices in cabs help to keep theft down, but there are times when a load is temporarily vulnerable.

A battery operated alarm that can be screwed to the inside bulk-head has been launched by Superswitch at a trade price of £64 plus vat. It has a passive infra-red detector with a 90 degree range of vision horizontally and vertically which responds to any moving heat source (such as a person) triggering a 110dB siren.

The Intruder alarm is selfcontained and operates from six AA size batteries. It has an anti-tamper device inbuilt which sets off the alarm if is is moved when armed.

After arming, which is done by entering a four digit code on a small panel, there is a 30 second delay to get out of range. On return there is a further 30 second delay after the alarm detects a presence to re-enter the correct code to disarm it.
