HAULIERS' need to obtain an international operator's licence to haul unaccompanied trailers from ferry ports to British destinations has been highlighted by recent experience.
A Kent operator, with only a national 0-licence, was stopped from hauling Ferrymasters trailers last year after Department of Transport inspectors stopped one of its vehicles.
His case has been taken up by East Kent Conservative MEP Christopher Jackson who has told EEC Transport Commissioner Stanley Clinton Davis that this is a "silly barrier to trade" which ought to be lifted.
But he is unlikely to win any support from either of the major British trade associations.
Road Haulage Association executive officer Bob Duffy said companies providing traction for British journeys were still undertaking international journeys and ought to be subject to the same rules as companies undertaking cross-frontier journeys.
